The Renta in Renta WEB, step by step
Renta WEB is the Agencia Tributaria tool to review your draft, add what is missing and file your income tax return. It runs in the browser on your computer or phone, nothing to install. If you already have a way to identify yourself (see «Before you start»), it will not take long.
Gather your papers
Have at hand your ID, your IBAN, the family changes of the year (wedding, children, moving), the cadastral references of your properties (they are on the IBI property tax bill) and the receipts of anything you can deduct: rent, mortgage, pension plan, donations, union fees…
If you want to know beforehand whether you will pay or get money back, try our Renta calculator.
Open Renta WEB
Go to sede.agenciatributaria.gob.es, open the Renta section and click the service to process the draft or the return (the one that mentions Renta WEB).
Identify yourself with Cl@ve, a certificate, the electronic ID card or the reference number. You can also do everything from the official Agencia Tributaria app.
First it asks you to confirm your tax address (where you live now). If you had already started another day, you can continue with what you saved or start a new return with up-to-date tax data.
💡 Tip: If it offers you Renta Directa, that is the fast lane for simple returns that need no changes. If you need to change anything, use Renta WEB.
Check your personal and family details
Check your marital status, children, older relatives living with you, disability and region of residence. If anything changed during the year, fix it.
If you want to see the joint return, your spouse’s data load when they identify themselves with their reference number or Cl@ve.
⚠️ Watch out: Your region matters a lot: it decides which regional deductions you can claim.
Check your work income and anything else you received
Under work income, compare what you see with your employer’s withholding certificate: income, tax withheld and social security contributions. If you had more than one payer (for example unemployment benefit), check they all appear.
Also look at bank interest, dividends, sales of shares or funds and any grants or benefits you received.
If you have the PDF of the draft or of your tax data, our draft reader explains it box by box.
Check your properties
Every home, garage or plot you own must appear with its cadastral reference and your ownership share. Mark your main home correctly.
A home that is not your main home and is not rented out (for example a holiday home) is taxed as «imputed income» even if you earn nothing from it. If you rent out a home, declare the rent: you can subtract its costs, such as IBI, community fees, insurance or repairs.
Look for missing deductions
This is where most money is lost: the tax office does not always know your deductions, especially the regional ones (rent for young people, birth of children, school costs, donations… depending on your region). This year Renta WEB warns about some, but not all.
Check the national ones too: pension plan, union fees, donations, maternity, large family and the main home deduction (only for purchases before 2013).
Our Renta calculator has the deductions of every region so you can see which ones fit you.
⚠️ Watch out: Only claim deductions you can prove with paperwork: the tax office can ask for it for years.
How to change something
The «Apartados declaración» (return sections) button takes you to any section to change or add data. Many fields open a window that asks for the data one by one.
When you finish, use the validate option so the tool warns you about errors. «Vista previa» (preview) shows a PDF of the return, but that PDF cannot be used to file it.
You can save and leave: your work is kept so you can continue another day.
If you are married, or a single parent with children, compare the individual and the joint return: Renta WEB shows the result of each one in columns.
File the return
When you agree with the result, click «Presentar declaración» (file return). If there are several options (individual or joint), choose the one you file.
Choose how you pay or get paid (next step), read any warnings, tick «Conforme» (I agree) and click «Firmar y enviar» (sign and send).
⚠️ Watch out: Check the IBAN before signing: last year’s account may appear.
If you get a refund or have to pay
Refund: enter your IBAN and the tax office pays the money into it. You can follow your refund on the tax website or in the app.
To pay, you can set up a direct debit from your account (filing before the direct debit deadline), pay at once with the NRC code your bank gives you, by card or with Bizum, or file with «Reconocimiento de deuda» (acknowledgement of debt) and ask to defer the payment.
You can also split the payment in two instalments with no interest: 60 % when you file and 40 % in November.
Keep the receipt
At the end you see a confirmation message and a PDF with the date and time of filing and the secure verification code (CSV). Download it and keep it.
If you lose it, you can download it again from the list of filed returns on the tax website.
💡 Tip: Keep it with the receipts of your deductions for at least four years: that is how long the tax office has to review it.
If you made a mistake
Open Renta WEB again, click «Modificar declaración presentada» (change filed return), fix it and file a corrective return (box 103). It works whether the mistake is against you or in your favour.
If the mistake meant you paid too little and you fix it after the deadline, you pay a surcharge (from 1 %, plus 1 % for each full month late) but no penalty. If it is in your favour, the tax office refunds the difference.
You have four years from the end of the filing period to correct it.
